Video: Rash of ATM smash-and-grab thefts in Hamilton

Hamilton police are warning about a rash of ATM thefts that are happening during early morning break-ins.

The thefts follow a similar pattern where suspects drive a vehicle through the entrance to a store and then remove ATM machines.

Hamilton police have released surveillance video of the latest theft on Tuesday at the Spring Grill Restaurant, 1441 Upper James St.

Three suspects can be seen in the video around 4:45 a.m., with one backing a stolen SUV into the front window of the restaurant and knocking over the ATM, at the direction of the other two suspects who then help load the ATM into the SUV.

Hamilton police are recommending business owners with ATMS move machines away from windows or doors, ensure ATMS are in view of security cameras and that they are affixed by a chain or bolted to the floor.

ATM machines should be regularly emptied.
