Second-degree murder trial underway in Hamilton domestic violence case

The second-degree murder trial of Haiden Suarez Noa, charged in the 2013 stabbing death of his girlfriend and mother of his son, is underway in Hamilton.

Suarez Noa, 41, has admitted killing Tania Cowell, 36, in their Stoney Creek apartment on March 9, 2013. He has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

His trial began Thursday with assistant Crown attorney Janet Booy delivering her opening address to the jury.

Booy said there is no dispute Suarez Noa killed Cowell.

“The issue is his intent at the time he killed her,” Booy told the jury.

“The evidence will show he stabbed her 11 times with a kitchen knife. One stab wound in the back and 10 stab wounds in her chest and neck area.”

Booy said the jury will also hear evidence from a pathologist that four of the 11 stab wounds were lethal on their own because each one penetrated major arteries.
